Ratan Tata Is Set To Launch Joint Venture Capital Fund With University Of California

Ratan Tata, Chairman emeritus of Tata Sons is set to launch a venture capital fund with the University of California. His investment firm, RNT Associates, partnered with the University of California to jointly fund startups for the next 10 years in India. Moreover, he has joined three venture capital firms, IDG Ventures, Kalaari Capital and Jungle Ventures, as an advisor. He has invested in 30 startups within the last two years, including Snapdeal, Urban Ladder, Patym, Ola, Zivame, Kyazoonga, MadRat and many others in sectors such as healthcare, financial inclusion, and e-commerce.
As per sources, the current core team consists of Mathias Imbach, who works for RNT associates based in Singapore; Tim Recker who is a Managing Director at the University of California (looking at the investments from the University’s side). Mayank Singhal, a former associate director at Singapore investment firm Temasek Holdings’ Indian unit has joined the group.
Plans of the VC
The Venture capital fund has a corpus of around $100-150 millions. Initially, they will write smaller cheques of around $5 million. Tata is already looking for startups. The venture has received clearance from markets regulator SEBI under its Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) norms, according to the public disclosure note.
