Google-Backed Chinese Startup Launches Smart Watch In Direct Competition With Apple

Mobvoi Inc. Claims Better, Cheaper Watches Than Apple Watch
The Google-backed Chinese startup, Mobvoi, is in the process of developing Ticwatch 2 , a second-generation smart watch that will be competing with Apple watch in the U.S. market. Ticwatch 2 is expected to go on sale in September.

A group of Googlers came together to form the startup which has already seen success with its first generation model of Ticwatch. The new smart watch can respond to questions asked in English and it can also order pizzas, call an Uber and search restaurants for you. It also comes with a touch-sensitive scroll feature.
Ties with Google
Since halting its operations in China due to government regulations, this is Google’s first direct investment in China. Early this year, Google also integrated Mobvoi’s voice-search feature with its Android Wear software.
The Plan
Ticwatch 2 will go on sale with a $200 price tag, which is actually a fraction of what an Apple watch costs. This is a smart move since it plans to compete with Apple watch in the U.S. market. It is also around $100 cheaper than Motorola’s Moto 360. Mobvoi aims to sell 50,000 watches within the first year of sale. The company is also looking at about $100 Mn revenue for 2017.
