Story of J.K. Rowling

Joanne “Jo” Rowling often known as J.K. Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in England at Yate. She adopted her pen name incorporating her grandmother’s name, Kathleen, for the latter initial. She graduated from Exeter University and then moved to Portugal to teach English in 1990.

Later there she got married to the Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes. The couple’s daughter Jessica was born in 1993. Unfortunately, the marriage ended in divorce and she moved to Edinburgh with her daughter, Jessica to live near her younger sister.
Rowling saw herself as a failure since her marriage had failed, and she was jobless with a dependent child and described her failure as liberating and allowing her to focus on writing. Later she signed up for welfare benefits, describing her economic status as being “poor”. She was in despair when her estranged husband arrived in Scotland, seeking both her and her daughter. However, she obtained an Order of Restraint, and filed for divorce in August 1994.

In 1995, Rowling finished her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on an old manual typewriter and submitted to twelve publishing houses, all of which rejected it. Later, Editor Barry Cunningham from Bloomsbury, a publishing house in London decided to publish Rowling’s book and it was only possible to Alice Newton, the eight-year-old daughter of Bloomsbury’s chairman, who was given the first chapter to review by her father and immediately demanded the next.
Later the books and as well as Rowling became history .The books were made into movies and grossed worldwide. In 2004, Forbes named Rowling as the first person to become a U.S.-dollar billionaire by writing books, the second-richest female entertainer and the 1,062nd richest person in the world.

Later in 2012, Forbes removed Rowling from their rich list, claiming that her US$160 million in charitable donations and the high tax rate in the UK meant she was no longer a billionaire. She has also received honorary degrees from St Andrews University, the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Napier University, and the University of Exeter. She also gave commencement speech at Harvard University in 2008. Read the full life story of J.K Rowling in this info-graphics.
