Groundbreaking Researches in Healthcare

Science helping to evolve our well-being
The main purpose of research is to increase knowledge with systematic problem solving methods. Demonstrating and measuring the benefits of these researches on healthcare outcomes is of paramount importance and highly desirable. Healthcare professionals and researchers at large seem to have recognised intuitively that technological inclusion studies are worthwhile, and are broadly the need of hour. Lets take a look at some of the breakthrough researches that would change the lives of people.
Smart prosthetics to regain sensation
The future of prosthetics is here,Researchers have developedsensors to make prosthetics smart. This research paper has been selected one of the best papers which was presented at Association for Computing Machinery’s UIST conference. Their vision is to create low-cost wearable sensors which can be used for prosthetics to fill thegap. The team developed it by conductive fabric sandwich a piezoresistive layer which helps to create pressure-sensitive grid covering the entire foot and ankle. When there is pressure on certain foot parts, it will cause the motors to vibrate at various frequencies. They also tested the prototype when the knee was bent. It also enables features like one can adjust things like position, intensity of feedback, and swap out motors. Moreover it is very flexible and of very low-cost device. As there is non-invasive feedback mechanism that means no surgery is required.
Smartphone to detect cancer in real fast time
Washington State University (WSU) scientists havenow invented smartphone which cost less and is portable. The phone helps in analysing various samples to detect any cancer with lab quality results. The research was published in the journal Biosensors and Bioelectronics by the team which was under the guidance of Lei Li, assistant professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. They developed an eight channel smartphone spectrometer which would help to detect human interleukin-6(IL-6), which is known biomarker for various cancer such as lung, prostate, liver, breast and epithelial cancers. This multi-channel spectrometer will help to measure eight different samples at once using ELISA, a common test which will identify antibodies and colour change as disease markers. The project funding was provided the National Science Foundation and WSU startup funds.
Smartest and safest baby bed
Other group of researchers have developed smartest and safest baby bed in the world. The bed mimics in sensation in a rhythmic way just like in the mother’s womb that helps baby to sleep easily without causing much trouble to parents. The crib is known as SNOO which starts shaking at slow pace thus aiding baby to sleep. It also has in-built microphones that will detect baby’s cries and then plays the sound. The bed was developed by, a pediatrician and child development specialist, Harvey Karp with collaboration Yves Behar, Swiss industrial designer and Massachusetts of Technology (MIT) engineers at USA. The crib could rock quietly and swiftly for million cycles which is enough for baby for 14 hours per day. The noise is designed in such a way that it adapts it volumes and pitch according to baby’s need which are soft, rumbly sounds for sleep, louder, high-pitched to soothe upsets. Moreover it can also be connected with smartphone through mobile app which would help parents to control SNOO from a distance and with breathable mesh one can view baby from all angles.
