Election Commission of India teams up with Facebook to Register Voters

Facebook will now notify users to vote!

It is first of a kind initiative in India. Our country’s Election Commission board has partnered with Facebook to engage more people particularly young generation voters to participate in 2017 Legislative Election taking place in five states – Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The board has associated with social networking tech giant, Facebook, to lead the voter registrations. The main motto behind this idea is to encourage the youth of India to vote.

How will it work?

The social media will cast out a ‘Register to vote’ button that will be shown up in the news feed of people who are eligible to vote in above mentioned states. By clicking on ‘Register Now’ button, it will take users to the National Voters’ Service Portal; from there one can go through registration process. The website also allows users to search their name in electoral roll, register online, and locate their assigned booth. From October 6th to 9th 2016, users in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakhand who are 18 or above age will receive a reminder to register. There are over 155 million users in India and looks like the commission board chose the right medium to aim audience.

Facebook and Twitter account to help young people

In addition to this, there is official Facebook page of Chief Electoral Officer, Uttarakhand so that it can connect young people and make them understand the power of voting in a democracy. They also have Twitter account handle @UttarakhandCEO with the same motto to engage young people in voting.
