The Collaboration

In order to make everyone aware of coding, nowadays many organizations like Code.org and companies are coming with code challenges and contest. The latest company to join this bandwagon is Snapchat. The company partnered up with California startup known as Vidcode for Coding Contest.

What is Vidcode all about?

The startup is taking a different approach, unlike other coding challenges. Most of them offer online courses for basic coding but Vidcode is allowing users to learn coding on their interests like Instagram filters, meme, and Snapchat geo filters. The company is launching Snapchat geo filter contest this Wednesday. The winner’s geofilters will be featured on the social app that can be used by Snapchat users.  The company stated that the participants have a month to create filters.

History of Vidcode

Alexandra Diracles, Co-founder, and CEO of the startup believes that this opportunity will be inspiring for teenagers where they can build something for such large audience. In 2014, the Company launched after a year of winning the hackathon, with the help of a Kickstarter campaign that was intended for raising funds for building the whole project.

What does company offers?

The company offers students various online, self-guided courses somewhat similar to Codecademy. One can start the lesson at their own pace using the online code editor. It also offers the user to upload their own content like videos and images, thus making the learning peculiar. It also has additional tools for teachers for classroom uses with an annual license. Vidcode is used by 5,000 U.S. schools and more than 100,000 students on board. The company states that their students are creating two to three projects per week.

What else does it do?

The company always goes with latest trends, in the previous week it introduced a course where the student can build AR game, which was inspired by Pokémon Go and witnessed around 5,000 projects. Vidcode’s only partner as of now is Snapchat, but it also collaborating with the Girl Scouts of Greater New York to develop the coding project for middle school, Intel Education, and Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. The company is also in talks with Facebook for Virtual reality education.

In summer, the company is taking part in Y Combinator. The startup has secured a small angel funding after its Kickstarter campaign.
