Mercedes-Benz’s First Fully Electric Heavy Transport Truck

Beckoning of Electric Transport
Daimler isn’t letting Tesla win the race. It has revealed it’s prototype of first fully electric heavy transport truck. This comes curiously close to Tesla CEO, Elon Musk’s announcement that they are making an electric transport truck. Named Mercedes-Benz Urban eTruck, Daimler revealed it in Stuttgart. It has a weight capacity of 29 U.S. tons and it is the first-of-its-kind clean energy big machine.
Meet Urban eTruck
The Urban eTruck is meant for urban use, as the name suggests. It can cover a maximum distance of 124 miles. Although the prototype is ready, Daimler is waiting for a suitable launch date when the truck will open up for wide sales. But this isn’t stopping Daimler from further using the eTrucks’ technology in its other automobiles; it’s using Fuso Canter E-cell in other light-weight trucks as well. The company is currently testing the E-cell in cars and also has tied up with a European courier company, Hermes.
The Hurdle
According to the engineering team, the tech guys have already taken care of most of the tech hurdles, especially the tech component that powers the vehicle. The reason why it is being meant for urban use currently is that there still are some issues regarding cost-to-efficiency ratio. This is due to the high battery cost. But Daimler is confident that in time they will be able to come up with a solution to that too.
