E-commerce Giant shelling out huge investments in food delivery based startup

Ele.me, a China based food ordering platform, raised a huge amount from Alibaba. The startup is a successful delivery system platform to connect various restaurants with consumers.

Ele.me is an online food ordering website. It facilitates delivery based services, connecting customers with restaurants. It is based in China, and was founded by Jia Kang and Xuhao Zhang. It is touted to be one of China’s biggest food delivery operating platforms.

In a recent round of funding, this company has raised $1.25Bn capital from Jack Ma led Chinese E-commerce giant Alibaba. Prior to this, investors like Sequoia Capital, JD and Tencent have also lent funds to Ele.me.

This investment has massively attracted attention that goes on to demonstrate just how largely the online food catering system is developing and branching in China. Interestingly, this round of funding also works toward cementing the position of the already behemoth company Alibaba in different spheres of functioning. Alibaba has also invested in other similar food catering businesses of China.

Ele.me is a successful delivery system operating across several cities in China, with an already established customer base. Their delivery team consists of people who deliver food on bicycles, electric bikes while clad in blue. The company has about 10,000 employees presently. The company operates on an O-2-O model, which can be translated as the successful integration of the “Online-to-Offline” model.

With the growing food and delivery enterprise in China, several other companies have started branching out in similar way. Baidu Takeout Delivery Service, being one of them. With available market of this magnitude, this is only going to be only the beginning of for the online food delivery service portals in China. This sector is slated to witness tremendous growth in the recent times.
