How to Get Started With Photoshop

Did you know that Adobe Systems Incorporated bought the distribution license for Photoshop in 1988 from American brothers Thomas and John Knoll? After Adobe saw the success of the program, they purchased the rights to Photoshop from the Knoll brothers for $34.5 million in 1995.

Since then, Adobe Photoshop has become a household name when it comes to picture editing. Photoshop may seem daunting when you launch it for the first time, but there is a reason why it is one of the most used photo editing software available. Luckily you can learn how to use Photoshop simply by playing around with the software.

So, keep reading to find out how to get started with Photoshop for beginners.

Use Layers

When it comes to Photoshop, the most important aspect to master is layers. Layers are the key when it comes to creating smooth (but impressive) artwork. Layers can also protect your original image so that you can easily undo any changes you make.

When you picture layers, you need to think of transparent glass panes that are stacked on top of one another. This allows each layer or pane to show what is on the one beneath it.

There are two types of layers you’ll use, content layers and adjustment layers.

Content layers are, as the name suggests, layers that contain content like shapes, text, and images. Adjustment layers are used to make non-destructive adjustments to the layers beneath them. Adjustment layers allow you to make changes to the saturation or brightness of the content layer without making any changes to the original content.

You can turn individual layers on and off to help you see how each layer affects the others. Next to each layer name, you’ll see a small eye icon that you can click to hide the layer from view.

Create Cutouts

A fun Photoshop skill to master is creating cutouts by removing the background from an image. Photoshop has a cutout tool that you can use to draw an outline around your object. Once your outline is drawn, you can play around with how the edge looks.

If you’re struggling to perfect your cutout, you can also take a look at Adobe Express’s photo background remover. Since Adobe Express is powered by Photoshop, you’ll have much more control when it comes to refining your cutout compared to other online options. You can also import the image from Adobe Express directly to Photoshop to continue working on the image.

Once you’re happy with your cutout, you can add it to a content layer before editing it further.
