Hyderabad Startup Makes Edible Cutlery

Now, you can eat spoons and forks!

About Bakeys’ Cutlery

Founded in 2010, Bakeys Foods Private Ltd. is a Hyderabad-based startup making disposable, but edible food cutleries that tastes like crackers. Made using healthy ingredients like dried millet, wheat and rice, it is a perfect alternative to disposable plastic/ wood cutlery and bamboo chopsticks. After long hours of research, the product is designed in such a way that the users feel comfortable to fully relish their gastronomic session. The brain behind such innovative cutlery is Narayana Peesapaty, who was working as a sustainable farming researcher at a nonprofit organization.

The idea behind Bakeys

The idea behind such a cutlery is to save thousands of plastic spoons and forks chucking the garbage and thus, reducing the use of plastic and being environment-friendly. Hence, he invented a cutlery that could be easily eaten instead of disposing it. Soups and such other liquids can be easily sipped with these edible spoons. They are said to be a bit more expensive than the plastic ones.

More about Bakeys Cutlery

Moreover, these edible utensils come in three flavors — plain, sweet (baked with a bit of sugar) and savory (seasoned rock salt, black pepper, cardamom and cumin). For gluten intolerant users, Bakey’s make them using the wheat with barley and corn. All the ingredients are sourced from local farmers.

These spoons have a shelf life of three years. In addition, the spoons can be baked at a high temperature so that it dissolves. The mixture can be added in your yogurt or soup to make it healthier.

Currently, Bakeys is working on developing more such edible products. By 2017, Bakeys plans to sell its products across the globe.

The spoons are available online for purchase; but only to customers within India.
