Chinese Tech Giant Xiaomi Introduces Its First VR Headset

Low-priced VR Headset!

Ever wanted a cool VR set like Oculus Rift or HTC Vive but don’t have hundreds of dollars to buy it? Well, now everyone can afford VR headset, all thanks to Xiaomi.Inc. It has introduced its first entry-level virtual reality headset, Mi VR Play. The main idea behind the company’s low-pricing strategy is to democratize technology. Recently, the company introduced Mi Notebook Air which will be competing against Apple’s MacBook in China.

About VR Play

Mi VR Play is extremely low cost and a simple VR headset. The device is simple as it can be; all you have to do is plug your smartphone into its lycra-built body and launch its VR app. The app will have VR content from various partners like CondeNast Traveler and YouKu (China’s YouTube). The company has also promised to invest around $1 billion in video content, which includes virtual reality content.

Specs

The device is 201mm in length, 91 mm in depth, and 107 mm in height and it is 208.7 gms in weighing. It will support any screen size phone from 4.7 –inch to 5.7 –inch. More than that, it also has a zipper on the front side so that phone doesn’t fall out once it has been inserted in.

Pretty impressive but here’s the real catch.

Even if you are in China, you can’t buy one. The company is only availing VR Play to limited beta users. Within just eight hours, over one million users signed up for the program; though the company has selected a fraction of them. The fortunate ones who got selected for the test program have to pay only RMB 1 ($0.15).
