Blippar, the AR/AI APP Bags $54 Million Funding
Blippar is an established Augmented Reality/ Artificial Intelligence app, founded by Ambarish Mitra and Omar Tayeb in 2011, it incorporates AR and AI techniques to inject life into the physical world. This UK based startup has conjured up an app that is capable of providing information about anything by merely pointing your Smartphone at it. Mitra, the current CEO of the firm has proudly proclaimed that retrieving information does not just end with Google and Yahoo. Blippar will be a smarter, faster and better version of all the existing knowledge portals available online.
Blippar’s major selling point is that it uses Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality to help brands advertise their products. The brands pay Blippar for various campaigns and for its dashboard of analytics.
Where it all Began:
Mitra was born in Calcutta and shifted to Delhi at the age of 14. Despite his parents’ wishes to become an engineer, young Mitra had other plans. In the year of 2000, he founded a company named womaninfoline.com. By 2009, he moved to UK and joined the insurance group AXA. The idea of Blippar emerged from a joke Mitra made about making the face of Queen Elizabeth on a £20 note come to life. The current design was perfected after two years of toil.
How it Works:
After downloading the app, the user has to point the phone camera towards an object and the app will detect the object. It will then provide countless pieces of information about the object. For example, if the phone is pointed at a fork, the app will provide you a list of various restaurants nearby or the nearest cutlery shops from where you can buy one or even information about the proper way to use a fork. Basically, you can get all information regarding the object of your focus by merely ‘blipping’ it.
Features of the Blippar App:
Here are some of the major features of the Blippar app:
- As mentioned earlier, the major component of the app is its ability to incorporate artificial intelligence to impart knowledge.
- Artificial intelligence increases Blippar’s ability to recognize objects and then retrieve information regarding the said object.
- The software currently possesses the intelligence of a six year old. This pseudo six year old is capable of identifying entities like cars, fruits, vegetables, books, clothes etc., but it is yet to develop so as to identify particular brands.
- As time goes on and the amount of users goes up, the AI will grow and soon be intelligent enough to recognize more entities like brands and faces.
Currently, more than 1000 brands have signed up with Blippar so that it can make them come alive and increase their publicity by multiple folds. It startup also witnessed a 200 % increase in its revenue in 2015. It recently raised a $54 million with the help of the government of Malaysia. The Malaysian government based investment fun Khazanah National Berhad is what led to the rounding up of this whopping amount. Blippar is active in over 170 countries and has more than 50 million users as of now.
