6 Essential Elements of a Good and Trustworthy Plastic Surgery Practice

The latest statistics show that plastic surgery is booming in the U.S. Over $17 million dollars was spent in 2019. Consumers should spend money on looking and feeling good. However, they need to make sure they use a reliable practice.

Solid Financial Management

Make sure the practice has a good financial reputation. Look out for stories about overcharged patients and unfiled insurance claims. These are “red flags” that you may not be in the best place. A good practice should hire a firm that handles Accounting for Plastic Surgeons. An accountant who knows about medical procedures makes sure the office is financially sound. For example, many insurance claims are not paid because practices use the incorrect billing code. An accountant who deals with medical offices stays on top of billing code changes.

You Get What You Pay For

There are many clues that practise should be avoided. For instance, be wary of bargain-basement procedure prices. A recent news story told of a Mississipi woman who saw an ad for buttocks enhancement for a few hundred dollars. Consumers should ask themselves how a doctor is able to drastically reduce the price. The woman had the procedure and was sick in a few weeks. Sadly, the patient was injected with industrial-grade silicone instead of the correct material.

Check the Surgeon’s Qualifications

Many doctors are performing cosmetic procedures and they’re not trained in plastic surgery. Last year, a Georgia physician admitted to surgery errors that left a patient with brain damage. The physician was trained as a dermatologist. Many other patients came forward with horror stories about the doctor. Indeed, many family physicians offer cosmetic injections like botox and fillers.

Experts say non-surgical procedures, like botox injections, can have side effects. It’s smart to let a plastic surgeon handle your cosmetic procedures. Ask family and friends to recommend someone they had a good experience with.

The Surgeon Should be Certified

Look for a plastic surgeon that is certified. The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) certifies physicians who’ve undergone the necessary training. Further, surgeons must pass tough exams covering all areas of plastic surgery. ABPS also keeps a list of certified plastic surgeons. The list reflects whether a surgeon has pending actions before a state medical board.

Surgery facilities need to be accredited, as well. More and more surgeons are opening their own day-surgery centers. The center should be accredited by an agency like the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. Many insurance companies will not pay for work performed in an un-accredited facility.

Hospital Affiliation is Essential

A plastic surgeon should have privileges at a hospital. Experts say ask a physician why they are not affiliated with a hospital. Complications may develop during surgery and the patient requires hospital care. Your surgeon should be able to be there with you.

Make Sure The Facility is Clean

Patients should tour the surgery center they’ll be using. A good surgical practice should have an impeccable operating room. The facility should be spotless and sterile. Likewise, the staff should be friendly and courteous. No one wants to end up in an operating room and feel uncomfortable.

Getting a new look with a cosmetic procedure may be something you’ve saved for. You saved and planned because you wanted to be more confident. Make sure the procedure is performed by a trusted plastic surgeon.
