Ford Invests in 3D Mapping Startup for Self-Driving Cars

Maps for Machine: An Interesting Topic to Read on!
Self-driving Cars are the Next-Gen Vehicles
Ford funds $6.6 Million to Civil Maps, a Californian startup founded in 2014 by Sravan Puttagunta. Civil Maps is into developing 3D maps by using Artificial Intelligence and sensor data for self-driving cars. With this, the renowned carmaker has contributed greatly in self-driving car technology. The mapping technology is an important aspect in the autonomous vehicle. Civil Maps uses spatial data for accurate locations. The seed round was led by Motus Ventures, which was joined by Ford, Wicklow Capital, StartX Stanford, and Yahoo cofounder Jerry Yang’s AME Cloud Ventures.
How it really works?
The software developed by Civil Maps uses 3D data from sensors like cameras and high-resolution laser imaging captured by Lidar technology. It organizes the information into machine-readable maps. Also, its artificial intelligence software allows it to cut data storage and transmission requirements, making it better suited to use mobile networks for crowdsourcing map data on the fly.
Autonomous vehicles need a totally well-advanced mapping technology so that the cars can drive itself like how humans do.
